I use some technology in the classroom. Powerpoint presentations, Excel graphing, video streaming, movies, and Google Earth to name a few. I believe that it engages students by giving them an opportunity to learn visually and to apply concepts to real life situations. Students critical thinking skills are heightened by having to process information in different learning modes. I think that it helps students because I learn best visually. Also, it helps students process results and make connections. It may hinder students learning because they aare getting so dependent on the internet. For example, I took my students to the library to research a scientist for a presentation. Many of the students did not know how to research the scientists. They were trying to find them using their first names in the encyclopedias. They did not want to take notes out of the books, they all wanted to wait to use the computers.
I like to do a mixture of bookwork, outlining, worksheets, activities, video clips, and maybe powerpoints. I incorporate some technology but I do not want to lose track of the learning objectives. The textbook is a good way to stay on track and the questions reinforce the content of the units.
